Dr. Michael Herce (surname pronounced “Air-thay”) is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Associate Director of International Operations for the UNC Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases, and Director of Implementation Science at the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ). An infectious disease physician and implementation scientist, Dr. Herce’s work focuses on improving access to high-quality healthcare for populations disproportionately affected by HIV, tuberculosis, COVID-19, and other infectious diseases.
Dr. Herce has lived and worked extensively in sub-Saharan Africa for more than a decade, leading large-scale research and programmatic efforts to strengthen HIV care delivery, improve outcomes for justice-involved and marginalized populations, and translate evidence-based interventions into “real world” clinical practice. His previous leadership roles include Clinical Director for Partners In Health–Malawi, Chief of Party for TB CARE II–Malawi, and Global Technical Lead for HIV/AIDS and Infectious Diseases at IntraHealth International.
Dr. Herce earned his MD, cum laude, from Yale University, completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School, and fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at UNC Chapel Hill. He also holds an MPH in Global Health from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and an MSc in Clinical Research from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. He lives in North Carolina with his wife, Iole Pizzola, and their two children.
